One of my favorite Sunday afternoon gatherings on Ambergris Caye is the Junior Sailboat Races held just off shore from the Catamaran Bar.
It's a short 1/2 mile walk up the beach from my Villa. Young people from the San Pedro area gather to learn the skills of sail boating and are more than eager to compete with each other while battling heat, wind and waves on the Caribbean Sea. Their broad smiles and energetic mannerisms are magnetic to all who pass. Their performance commands that you identify with the respect and love they have for the sea.
Louis is the bartender who serves up the drinks to the observers. The beach barbeque and food service is sanctioned by Leon. All the while, there is entertainment at its finest from local artists who perform to a beat that ranges from old time rock and roll to reggae. Locals and tourists gather to exchange greetings, eat and listen to music as the young nautical navigators display their skills and enthusiasm.
Every week is different with the changing weather conditions that these young sailors encounter. The changing food and drink specials served up by Leon and Louis are pretty darn good too.
