Ladies Luncheon at Ak'bol Yoga Retreat & Eco Resort, San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, Belize

One thing that is not lacking on this little island in the Caribbean is the variety and quality of food. Some of the best food I've enjoyed is at the monthly "ladies luncheon" which is a pot-luck.  Wow, there are some good cooks here!

I just have to highlight a few of my favorite places (not listed in any particular order) and to share some photos of the delicious meals that are set in front of me. I'm just thankful that I walk a lot and ride my bike to burn off any excess caloric intake and remove all guilt from indulging in the simple pleasures of the taste buds!

Fresh Fish and Meats
I have to admit that Caramba this is one of the most wonderful restaurants I have visited on the Island of Ambergris Caye. It was quite by accident that we chose to have dinner here, but the food was excellent and the attention to detail and the staff were extraordinary. Just going to post a few pictures of my meal and the meal of some of the other patrons.

Ceviche
For the Ceviche lovers I would recommend Wild Mango's and Hurricanes Ceviche Bar & Grill. Ceviche is readily available at almost all restaurants on the island as an appetizer. El Divino, located south of the town of San Pedro in the Banana Beach resort, has a large selection and super large platters that can serve as an appetizer for large groups or a fulfilling meal in itself. There is an abundance of fresh fish available which makes for excellent ceviche at almost all the restaurants.

Wings
AJ's (a/k/a Average Joe's). This little bar and restaurant is undoubtedly one of my favorite places for wings and a draft beer. They are expanding their menu to now include pulled pork and also have the best cheesy fries I think I've ever had. Sandy Gore, from Arizona, recently purchased this establishment and as she awaits her "work permit" she employs an amazing staff of bartenders, waiters and cooks. Although located a block off the beach, they have live music and fun events several nights a week that are enjoyed by local families as well as tourists to the island.

Sweets and Sandwiches
The Baker is without question one of the best values where you can purchase the freshest of food - anything from breakfast sandwiches on flaky croissants to perfected cinnamon rolls and an assortment of fresh baked bread, mini key lime pies, cookies and delicious sandwiches. They serve some of the best Pizza on the island on Fridays and their "pigs-in-a-blanket" (sausages or all beef dogs rolled in pastry or pretzel rolls) are my favorite! They also offer smoothies, soft drinks and an exceptional brew of Caye Coffee.

Pulled Pork
Estelle's by the Sea and Lazy Croc's BBQ are two restaurants that have "nailed" the pulled pork sandwich - Estelle's is located in the heart of San Pedro offering the most relaxing atmosphere to enjoy everything from fish taco's to an all day breakfast menu. Located right on the beach, this is one restaurant that is a "must visit". Lazy Croc's is located north of San Pedro. Their pulled pork and cole slaw are some of the best I've had. The setting is tucked away aside a lagoon and, as the name implies, you can often catch a glimpse of the crocodiles while enjoying your meal. The day we visited, we were also entertained by a colorful and busy woodpecker.

Grilled Specialties and Traditional Dining
Ricco's Bar and Grill is just a short walk from my Villa and you can often find me on the deck of the restaurant taking in the beautiful sea breezes and ocean view. Although they have an extensive, breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, my favorite dish here is the fish and chips with a Caesar salad. They have live music on occasion and I can also recommend the steak and lobster dinner without hesitation. The staff here is friendly, efficient and attentive and extend personal attention to all they meet.

Fido's restaurant is located in town center and have an expansive restaurant, quality specialty shops, live music almost every night and is situated right on the beach. I've always had good meals here and usually opt for their specialty of the day. It is a clean and vibrant restaurant and bar that should be on your list of must visit places while in San Pedro.

Specialty Food and Ambiance
I enjoyed a "melt in your mouth" almond encrusted snapper on Christmas Eve at Hidden Treasures. My guests and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this restaurant and it is a true treasure. They offer complimentary pick-up and return taxi service to their establishment which is tucked away several blocks from the main road. As you are seated, the attentive staff brings cooling face cloths to your table which is a very refreshing start to an excellent meal. The restaurant is an "open air house" and covered by a thatched roof. Small lights adorn the exterior giving it a fairy tale like appearance at night. They have live music which adds to the overall ambience of this restaurant which has an extensive dinner menu.
taste of thailand - san pedro belizeTaste of Thailand -  I have to admit that I have never had Thai food. I eagerly accepted an invitation to eat at the recently re-opened Thai restaurant located only blocks from the villa. I was amazed. This restaurant is run by a genuinely wonderful family and I would heartily recommend this restaurant and the food to anyone.

Special MentionCaye Coffee Roasting Company
While on your visit to San Pedro you will no doubt visit the local markets. If you are a coffee drinker, the best coffee available is locally roasted and packaged by Caye Coffee Roasting Company. I would recommend purchasing several bags of this coffee to take home to all of your friends and family who are coffee snobs. They will absolutely love it.
If you like corn chips with your salsa and cheese dips, I also recommend you to pick up a bag of "La Familia" corn chips that are made fresh every day by a local family in their tortilla factory.

DandE's Frozen Custard & Sorbet - This small "mom and pop" shop is run by a family who relocated here from Pennsylvania. They serve the tastiest homemade frozen custard and sorbet and are located on Middle Street in downtown San Pedro.

Jamaican and Stewed Chicken - Belize Style
When approaching Robin's Kitchen, you will see a smoker style drum b-b-q grill, a small stand, and a few tables under an awning. The smells from the grill will draw you into this quaint little establishment. I believe they make the best beans and rice served with their unbelievably perfect seasoned jerk & stewed chicken. We recently had our freshly caught snapper cooked to perfection and served up with full side dishes. This is one of the best places to eat picnic style or to take your meal "to go" back to your hotel or to the beach which is short one block walk.

Authentic Belizean Cuisine
El Fogon is located just north of the Tropic Air Terminal in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. They have an assortment of delicious, fresh food and friendly service with a menu that focuses in Authentic Belizean Cuisine. Their lunch menu includes Stewed Meats, Seafood & Soups and dinner consists of Grilled Seafood, Shrimp on an Orange and Ginger Sauce or a Mango Sauce, Seafood Creole platter and much more...all served with a choice of Coconut White Rice or Rice and beans cooked on the open fire. Their menu has something for everyone and you can just smell and taste the freshness of the food.

melt restaurant san pedroGrilled Cheese Sandwiches and Vegetarian Healthy Meals
Melt Cafe is another of my favorite restaurants. You can enjoy sea views while indulging in specialty and artisan Grilled Cheese sandwiches, fresh salads and many vegetarian and healthy options. The owners, Mark & Michelle, are awesome and will guarantee you amazing service and fabulous food. The fresh squeezed watermelon mimosas at this restaurant are the best!

These are only a few of my favorite places to eat and socialize while on the island. You can determine from the list that many types of cuisine are available to entice the most discerning palettes. I find that the cuisine found in any travel adventure, near or far, add tremendously to the experience.
